Job Description:
The Associated Press seeks a
newsperson for its Sports Desk in New
York City.
This newsperson edits national game
stories and breaking news. This person
works with writers in the field and New
York staffers, crafting leads, tightening
copy, plugging holes and eliminating
mistakes. This position could lead to a
beat reporting job requiring strong writing
skills and the ability to develop contacts.

The Baltimore Sun is seeking a team-
oriented individual for the sports copy desk.
This job involves work as a rim person, wire
editor and slot. It does not involve page
layout or design. Requirements include
broad sports knowledge, an eye for detail,
news judgment, a flair for writing headlines
and cutlines, excellent word skills,
familiarity with AP style, tenacity in fact-
checking and a solid grounding in the
rules of grammar. Night and weekend work
required. The Sun's 2-year internship
program is for recent college graduates
and journalist who have not worked at a
daily paper for more than one year.

The Colorado Springs Gazette is looking
for someone to direct our high school
sports coverage in the newspaper and
online. We devote more resources to high
school sports than any other single
coverage area and we recently launched a
statistical service and story package on our
Web site.
About 95 percent of the job is editing copy
and managing a staff of part-time clerks
and reporters. The other 5 percent of the
job would be writing stories when news
breaks and developing enterprise stories
during the year. We're looking for someone
with a sense for news, vision for enterprise,
ability to handle different tasks and
patience to work with people with varying
talent and experience.
A bachelor's degree and editing
experience is preferred. Management
experience is a plus, but this could be a
great opportunity for a strong copy editor
who is ready to move into a management
role.
The Gazette sells 97,000 papers daily and
107,000 on Sunday. We are at the base of
Pikes Peak along the front range of the
Rockies. We have more than 250 sunny
days per year. You can hike in the
mountains and be home for lunch. Skiing
is a day trip.
